Tips for Maintaining a Minimal Kids' Wardrobe
If you're embarking on the slow fashion path and want to create a minimalist capsule wardrobe, here's how to get started:
While most minimalist wardrobes have between 15 and 50 clothing pieces, there's no strict number of items to have in your closet. The key aspect is to have only clothes you need and love and discard the ones you don't use nor need. A minimalist wardrobe is having only the clothes you need and love.
How to Create a Kids Capsule Wardrobe
The idea behind Project 333 is simple: Wear only 33 articles of clothing for the next 3 months. ... Exceptions include wedding rings, underwear, sleepwear, in-home loungewear, and workout clothing. Clothing that no longer fits or becomes in poor condition may be replaced during the time period.
How many pairs of jeans do you really need? Whatever the reasons behind this rather excessive average jean ownership rate, denim experts believe that 3 pairs of jeans is enough for any wardrobe, these 3 pairs of jeans can be categorised as; Dressy jeans. Every day casual jeans.
I found that a wardrobe only needs about 15-20 tops to be fully functional and versatile. The way I narrowed it down here was by ensuring each top can be worn with a mix of bottoms. For every pair of bottom I owned (denim, skirts, and shorts), I really only needed 2-3 tops.
Then 7 t-shirts should be more than plenty. If they wear 7 pairs of socks and underwear a week and you wash twice a week, 10 pairs of everything is more than plenty.
Then there's ultra-minimalists: people who want to live with as few possessions as possible. This can include counting every item they own and trying to keep the total quantity under 100 total items. With our lean-and-mean list coming in around 111 (give or take), we have respect for them!
Kids grow fast and we need to replace clothes quickly--so from a financial and sustainability perspective, it's important to buy less to waste less. A kid capsule ideally includes between 12-14 items of everyday wear. That means each season they need roughly 6 tops, 5 bottoms, and a dress for girls.
Here is what I pared down to (per child): 7 casual outfits. 3 dressy outfits (probably 2 casual dressy, 1 fancier) 3 pajamas (maybe 4-5 for the toddler)
I usually aim for 6-7 pairs of jammies for each girl (summer and winter) and I find that to be sufficient. They usually wear them for 2 nites unless they get dirty.
