In its first report on its autonomous vehicle operations in Phoenix, Arizona, Waymo said that it was involved in 18 crashes and 29 near-miss collisions during 2019 and the first nine months of 2020.
Back in 2016, many of the field's leading technology developers and car manufacturers indicated 2020/21 would be the time when self-driving cars hit the road for mainstream public use. The year 2020 came and went. It is now 2021 and the public has yet to see fully autonomous cars in nearly every major American city.
The prospect of widespread use of driverless cars brings with it many benefits: fewer traffic accidents and the economic toll caused by property damage, injury or death that results. Energy costs will also be saved as these autonomous vehicles maximize driving efficiency and reduce traffic congestion.
