Ranking Considerations:
Your rank order list is confidential and never will be shared with the programs. You are the only person, other than NRMP staff, who can access your ROL unless you give your username and password to someone else.
To Create a Primary Rank Order List
The easiest to get into is Family, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics. The easiest to go through is Psychiatry, then Family Medicine, and PM&R.
100-150 ranks: $50. 151-200 ranks: $100. 201-250 ranks: $150. 251-300 ranks: $200.
85% of the US medical residency programs filled with an average of 13 ranks per position. That is, residency programs rank an average of 13 times the number of residency positions that are available.
For the average student, ranking 10-12 programs will likely ensure a match. Work backwards from this number to account for attrition of programs during the application and interview process.
Any two applicants can participate in the Main Residency Match® as a couple. Each submits a rank order list and the algorithm treats those lists as a pair for the purposes of matching. Home, sweet match.
Quite simply, the more interviews you have the better chances you have to match. As a non-U.S. IMG, when you have 10 interviews or more your chances of matching reach greater than 80%. If you are lucky enough to have 12 interviews, your chances of matching is greater than 90%.
