Pack two different outfits in different sizes because you don't know how big or small your baby will be! Aim for one outfit in newborn size and one 0-3 months. Don't forget hats and/or socks, if weather appropriate.
Pack some soft maternity clothes to wear home when you leave the hospital. Remember, you just gave birth. So loose, comfortable clothes are your best option.
What to pack in a hospital bag: For your baby
Generally, you do not need as many baby clothes as you may think. I see websites and baby registry helpers recommending way too many baby clothes to expectant mothers. Half the items they recommend your new baby will never wear.
Things Not to Pack in Your Hospital Bag
If she's a big baby or hits an early growth spurt, you can exchange any extras for the next size up: 0 to 3 months, which usually fits babies anywhere between eight to 12.5 pounds. Over time, you'll figure out more about baby's shape and your preferences, and will have a better idea of what will work best for him.

Nice-to-have items
Nappies. About 20 to 30 nappies made especially for newborns, like Pampers Premium Protection New Baby. Your newborn might get through 10-12 nappies each day.
You basically want all of the same essentials as the newborn list, but in the 0-3 month size. Remember, that if the brand has a single month, that is considered the upper limit. So, your 0-3-month old baby will wear Carters' size “3 months” up until then.
It is hard to know how much your baby will weigh at birth, but unless you have been told you might be having a smaller or larger baby, we suggest perhaps a 1 or 2 first size sleepsuits, 2-3 newborn size sleepsuits and 4-5 0-3 month sleepsuits.
The longest a baby usually wears newborn is about 1-2 weeks after their due date (even if born early- by the due date they are usually in newborn size). Therefore, for a new baby gift, I would go with a 3M (0-3M) or 6M (3-6M) size to get a little longer wear.
