AmeriCorps State and National provides grants to non-profits, faith & secular community- based organizations, public agencies, Indian tribes, and institutions of higher education. These programs provide Americans, young and old, with opportunities to serve as AmeriCorps members in communities across the country.
AmeriCorps is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency. However, virtually all AmeriCorps positions are hosted by local nonprofits, government agencies, and faith-based organizations that have applied for and received AmeriCorps grants.
Therefore, AmeriCorps VISTA prohibits illegal drug use and alcohol abuse by its Leaders and members. Some sponsoring organizations may require AmeriCorps VISTA Leaders and members to pass a drug screening test before or upon arrival, or during service at the project site.
AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential program for 18-24 year-olds. Members develop leadership skills by serving in public safety, environment, and disaster projects. FEMA Corps, a unit of NCCC, focuses solely on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
Some AmeriCorps programs pay for housing, which drastically reduces cost of living.

Job Corps participants improve job skills and find vocational direction while living on Job Corps campuses. Ameri- Corps volunteers serve U.S. communities by helping with local needs. Peace Corps volunteers support constructive projects in countries around the world.
In general, you'll need to be at least 17 or 18 years old and a U.S. citizen or national or lawful permanent resident. Some programs have no education requirements. Many VISTA programs ask that volunteers have a college degree or at least three years of work experience.
Regardless of the program, a criminal history involving a murder conviction and/or a crime that requires the individual to register as a sex offender will automatically disqualify them from serving through CAC AmeriCorps.
An AmeriCorps NCCC member should expect the following:
All members undergo a drug test upon their arrival at the campus. Random drug testing does occur throughout the term of service.
Current limits on number of terms an individual can serve: AmeriCorps NCCC- no limit on service terms, but members may NOT serve more than two consecutive NCCC terms without a break of at least 10 months before serving again. AmeriCorps State and National- four terms.
