AmeriCorps members typically live in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles (Lincoln Heights, El Sereno), Koreatown, Echo Park, South Los Angeles (USC) or Huntington Park and each pay between $500–$700/month with two to three roommates. The program design is a 10-month program with a living allowance of $12,100, paid on a monthly basis of $1,210 per month.
There are three programs that offer different paths to national service: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC.
While it's true that AmeriCorps members are considered volunteers and do not receive a salary, they do receive a monthly living stipend to help cover rent, groceries, gas, and other expenses.
If you make a good impression during your term, you'll have a major leg up compared to other graduates. I can personally attest that having AmeriCorps on your resume sets you apart.

The AmeriCorps VISTA website explains that the stipend “enables you to live very frugally, like the community you are serving. The allowance is based on poverty rates for a single individual in your geographic area.” ... Fortunately, many AmeriCorps members have developed strategies to live well while living on a budget.
Is it a government program? Yes and no. AmeriCorps is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency. However, virtually all AmeriCorps positions are hosted by local nonprofits, government agencies, and faith-based organizations that have applied for and received AmeriCorps grants.

*The CARES Act, passed by Congress in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, increased the upper age limit for participation as an AmeriCorps NCCC Corps Member to 26 years old. Under the CARES Act, Section 3514(d), the upper age limit for AmeriCorps NCCC members is 26.
How old do I need to be to serve in AmeriCorps? The minimum age requirement for most AmeriCorps programs is 18. However, some accept applications from 16-17-year-olds. While a few programs are designed specifically for young adults, the majority of our programs have no upper age limit.
