They succeeded in some cities and stumbled in others, but overall, bike share programs in the U.S. have been a success, according to research coming out of the University of Washington.
1 – Hangzhou, China
The city of Hangzhou, with a population of around 7 million, boasts the world's largest bike share program.
As of December 2016, roughly 1000 cities worldwide have a bike-sharing program.

The earliest well-known community bicycle program was started in the summer of 1965 by Luud Schimmelpennink in association with the group Provo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. the group Provo painted fifty bicycles white and placed them unlocked in Amsterdam for everyone to use freely.
Lyft acquired Motivate, the parent company of Capital Bikeshare and a number of other major bikesharing systems around the country, last year.
Starting a bike share program requires substantial capital, typically about $4,000 to $5,000 per bike, which also covers the cost of docking stations and kiosks, said Russell Meddin, the founder of Bike Share Philadelphia.
Lime said Wednesday that Jump bikes will now be available exclusively through the Lime app for the next few weeks. Once it has integrated Jump's software, the bikes will be available through both the Uber and Lime apps. Lime plans to add Jump bikes to more cities, starting with Rochester, Minnesota.
Until then, though, these are the world's 20 most bicycle-friendly cities.
